To be completely honest, I’ve only read the first 50 Shades book. See, I was working at a sex toy shop during the absolute height of 50 Shades fever. We weren’t selling many copies, but that’s because everyone who came in had already read them all. During slow days, I would read in an effort to better understand this mania that had gripped the nation.

50-Shades-Vibrator-Rechargeable
While I’m not a big 50 Shades fan, I have to say that Lovehoney did a very good job on the toy line. (See my previous review on the Hard Limits Restraint Kit.) The entire 50 Shades of Grey line ranges from $9.99 to $199.99, and includes everything from lubes to restraints, and butt plugs to wands.

I chose the 50 Shades of Grey Deep Within Luxury USB Rechargeable Classic Vibrator, because it seemed like the toy I would enjoy the most from the entire selection. It’s a well-known, arguably plain shape, but that’s what makes it effective. As far as specs are concerned, Deep Within has an ever-so-slightly curved shaft with a tapered tip, and the insertable length is 6″, while the girth is 1.5″. As the name indicates, it is rechargeable via USB.

Deep Within?

Not really. I mostly use it clitorally.

But no one polled me when they were naming it.

Can you insert it? Absolutely, but I didn’t get a lot out of using it that way. To be fair, it is only slightly curved, and isn’t really designed to be a mindblowing G-spot toy. But that’s not to say that it’s bad – not at all.

In my opinion, it’s designed to be a gateway luxury vibrator that appeals to fans of the books and film, someone who wants something with more punch and prestige than a bullet. And for this? It’s great. I love it when introductory toys actually work.

Deep Within is easy and comfortable to hold, and there’s not a lot of vibration transfer. Vibration transfer 1 is something that tends to ruin my orgasmic concentration, so I really appreciate this aspect of the design.

Most of the time, I can orgasm easily by using Deep Within externally. A few times, with it turned up to its highest speed (of 3) and was already turned on, I actually came within 5 minutes. The slightly tapered tip allows me to get the kind of precise stimulation I usually like, and even makes it possible to use during PIV sex in certain positions.

On the other hand, it doesn’t quite cut it for me on particularly difficult orgasm days. Then I have to bring in reinforcements. I think this has something to do with my hormonal cycle, how often I orgasm, and base levels of arousal. This is also a common struggle for people on antidepressants, like me.

The Nitty-Gritty

Build: Deep Within is like many other luxury vibrators in that the body itself is hard and coated with velvety silicone. Its buttons resemble the volume bezel on the older iPhone 3G/3GS and are easy to use. The left side (2 lights) of the control button turns the vibrator on, then cycles you through its speeds and patterns. The right side (1 light) takes you back down in speed or patterns, and turns the vibrator off. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s easy, it’s convenient, and I don’t find myself accidentally pressing either button when I’m actually using the toy. It also comes with a satin carrying bag, although the bag is stamped with “50 Shades of Grey”, so it’s less inconspicuous than other carrying bags.

Experience: It has 3 speeds and 4 patterns, which is about par for the course when it comes to nicely made vibrators below $100, in my experience. The vibrations aren’t surface-level buzzy, but they aren’t the deepest, rumbliest vibrations either. 2 I would say that on the top speed, it’s slightly buzzier than one of the higher speeds on the much-loved Mona 2. When grasping them both – one in each fist – I found it hard to detect a sizable difference in vibration strength. And at less than half the cost, this 50 Shades vibe is a strong competitor.

Charging:  This is one of those vibrators that requires you to puncture the fine silicone skin over the charging port in order to charge it for the first time. The reason for this design is that it makes it very easy to offer a submersible toy; the silicone that you poked through will help block the hole when you pull the charger out again. Also, it’s kind of like those Japanese sodas that require you to pop the marble down into the drink 3, and I always appreciate a bit of pageantry.

Who’s It For?

I would recommend this to anyone who’s looking for a good toy at a pretty reasonable price point. $79.99 isn’t nothing, but it’s much more affordable than many other luxury brands. 4

When it comes to buying a new toy, I would always encourage you to think about what’s worked for you before. Did you have a cheapie vibrator that paved the path to orgasm? Ready for an upgrade in both build quality and vibration? This would be a great choice. Are you looking for your first vibrator, and want to strike a balance between quality and affordability? Great choice. Do you normally require something like a Hitachi, Doxy Wand, or Eroscillator to even get close to climax? This probably isn’t for you.
